Synapse Jiu Jitsu was born out of the desire to create a high-level, beginner-friendly Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy where everyone, regardless of age, ability, or identity, feels like they belong. Here at Synapse, student growth and empowerment is the central focus of class, and of Synapse’s wider culture.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, often called Jiu Jitsu or BJJ for short, is a grappling martial art in the same traditions as Judo. While jiu jitsu starts on the feet just like judo and wrestling, the majority of grappling in BJJ takes place on the ground. In competition, a match ends when one grappler submits the other through a choke or joint lock, or when the time runs out, by a point system based on positional control.
Jiu Jitsu, meaning "the gentle art" in Japanese, evolved from early 20th-century judo and was refined in Brazil into a system focused on leverage, technique, and control rather than size or strength. Over time, it developed into a martial art where students test skills against fully resisting partners. This emphasis on live training has made jiu jitsu one of the most effective and enduring martial arts in the world today.
Jiu jitsu is unique among martial arts in its ability to be practiced live, at high intensity, while remaining relatively low-impact. This combination allows students to develop practical, real-world confidence and skills while supporting long-term training and sustainable progress, whether the goal is sport competition or self-defense.
